C&T & Prospero to help shape the future of new theatre & arts venue for Worcester
C&T, the creators of Prospero, are collaborating with Worcester City Council, England, and other cultural partners to shape a brand new theatre and arts venue for the city. The project breathes new life into the long derelict Scala cinema and historic Corn Exchange, converting them into spaces for the arts and culture in our digital century.
With an emphasis on participation, learning and community, the new venue will add something distinctive to the city’s arts offer. It will also breath life into a currently dilapidated area of the city centre, Angel Place, with the hope of creating new jobs and attracting business.
C&T are part of the new Worcester Cultural Consortium, working with the city council on the Scala project. The consortium consists of other local arts organisations: DanceFest, Mobilise, Severn Arts, the Kiln and James Anderson. Together the consortium represents hugely diverse arts practices: dance, theatre, film, media, music, community arts, cinema - with taking part at the heart of all their values. When the new venue is ready it is hoped the Scala will home to a huge range of other artists and organisations local to the city and beyond.
Dr Paul Sutton, C&T and Prospero’s Artistic Director said of the development: “This is a huge opportunity for Worcester and we are glad to be playing a part. It will also offer so much for our own innovative practice bringing together drama, digital technology and participation. We have so many ideas: new projects, new partnerships and new collaborations. It will help transform our work for years to come. And its great to be working alongside so many brilliant artists and the city council.”
